FitBloggin '10 Was a Success!

I wasn't sure what to expect at FitBloggin since I've never been to a blogging conference before. I'm happy to report that it exceeded my expectations. Not only was it well-thought and and organized, it was informative and fun! Thanks to Roni for organizing such a wonderful event. I'm looking forward to the next one!

Recap: Friday we enjoyed a POM pomegranate martini reception. Yummm!  I was looking forward to the 5k on Saturday morning until the New Balance guy said he was going to lead us at an 8-minute per mile pace. Say what??!!!  I was representing the back of the pack and that was ok with me. Carrie did great - it was her first 5k. Breakfast was Quaker oatmeal and all the fixins. And COFFEE. The breakout sessions were very good. Some of my favorites were Beyond the Blog: Getting Published and Using Social Media to Reach Goals. We ended the conference with a keynote by David Grotto and a reception sponsored by Jello. We ended the conference with a yoga class on Sunday morning - I'm a little sore!

Hope you all enjoyed the conference.  What was your favorite part?

What is Wrong With People?

A very good friend of mine just brought this story to my attention and I am mad. So mad that this story is also a post on my Incandescent Life blog.

Please check out this link to see the story for yourself: http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/bizarre&id=7332802

This woman in N.J. already weighs about 600 lbs and wants to be the fattest woman in the world. She says she won't be happy until she's 1,000 lbs.  She also has a young daughter who is about 3 years old.
This woman is very selfish and a bit off her rocker. She won't make it to 1,000 lbs because she's probably going to have a heart attack or some other kind of major health problem long before that.

As a woman who used to weigh in at 235 lbs once (and even more another time) I'm appalled by this story and this woman. It's one thing to accept yourself and love yourself no matter what size you happen to be, but this goes beyond my comprehension.  I just don't understand why anyone would purposely want to gain even more weight.  With more than 60% of U.S. adults overweight or obese we need to work on getting smaller, not larger!

Women Who Drink More Weigh Less.

There's a new study out that was conducted by Brigham and Women's Hospital. The study concluded "Normal-weight women who drink a light to moderate amount of alcohol appear to gain less weight and have a lower risk of becoming overweight and obese than non-drinkers."

I heard on the news that women ate less because they filled up on drinks instead. While we all like to indulge once in a while, a healthy amount of alcohol for women is one drink per day. So, if you're a wine drinker like me, that's 5 ounces per day for women and 2 drinks for men. That's the healthy range. Any more then that and the risks will eventually start to outweigh the benefits.

Most women I know (me included) enjoy a glass of wine (or a few) a few times a week. But we also exercise a lot and eat healthy for the most part.

Ladies, let's lift a glass and toast to our health!

Spring is in the Air so Get Movin!

Cherry Blossoms in Washington, D.C. 2009

Spring is coming. I am SOOOO happy about that.  It's been a rough winter and most of us in the northeast have had enough. According to meteorologists Spring is already here. I am ok with that!

Today is a gorgeous day and it's around 60 degrees. It's the best day so far this year.  I had the windows open and went outside with my cat Maya for a while. There's nothing like a little fresh air and sunshine to make anyone feel better, even cats!

With better weather comes more sunlight and more reasons to get outside and get some fresh air.

Simple things you can do:
  • Take a walk around your neighborhood, or in a park or on a local trail
  • Take your dog for extra walks
  • Sit out in your backyard or on your balcony for 20 minutes a day with a book or magazine
  • Do some yard work
  • Open the doors and windows to air out your home
  • Plant some spring flowers
I'd love to hear how you're enjoying the spring weather and beating the winter blahhhs.
